Consuming Knowledge vs. Producing Knowledge
Traditionally, the assumption underlying our approaches to learning in schools has
been that of “consuming knowledge.” The teacher pours out knowledge that students
are supposed to learn. A major part of this view of learning is that students enter
classrooms as empty receptacles and can learn the material just as the teacher has
presented it. A great deal of research on children’s learning over the past several
decades has shown that such a view of learning is not at all valid.
Levels of Cognition Involved with Reading and Interactions with Other Learning Activities
The following diagram represents the levels of cognition involved with a variety of learning
activities. From the perspective of one's own learning, as a teacher, these levels can inform
us about how we are thinking and how deeply we can go into the critical analysis of our professional
work and participation.
